Josef Frank – Werkbundsiedlung Wien

Five years after the first exemplary housing estate in Stuttgart presented the concepts of Modernist architects with regard to contemporary housing and residential environment, the substantially larger exhibition in Vienna followed. A total of 70 houses were built along designs by 31 architects on the site. As for its character, this development is more like a pile of free-standing pavilion-like buildings meant to be realised as a fabric of structures combined with integrated palettes. Each building is an experiment in itself. Owing to their character, they reflect the architects’ responses to issues concerning the relationship between interiors and nature; the need for minimal size, but contemporary apartments; and the differentiation of interior areas through level shifts.
